Part L compliance for “Buildings Other Than Dwellings” Explained At Varming Consulting Engineers, we are keen to spread the word about all matters relating to energy efficiency in the built environment and our building services design consultants work tirelessly to utilise existing and emerging technologies to achieve the optimum level for every project we complete for our clients.

Here, we look at Part L compliance that relates to the energy efficiency design standards required to create a building.

Multifaceted
There are many aspects to consider when design engineers are creating a highly energy efficient building, which is reflected in the multifaceted nature to Part L compliance regulations.

Part L is a subsection of general building regulations that relates to the conservation fuel and energy and was created in 1997, with the latest amendment occurring in 2017 to reflect the requirements of the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (Recast) in relation to the requirement that all buildings be Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB) by 31st December 2020.

The many parts to the compliance document are designed to:
❏ Limit the production of CO2 and energy needed for everyday operation.
❏ Support use of efficient building services systems.
❏ Reduce the distribution and storage heat lost from ducts, pipes and vessels.
❏ Provide highly efficient and easily controllable artificial lighting.
❏ Inform the owner or users of the building about to efficiently control all building systems

Of course, there are other parts to Part L compliance, which can be read on the full document at on the Irish government website http://bit.ly/2nLZsR8 , available as a downloadable pdf called Conservation of Fuel and Energy - Buildings other than Dwelling.
