Varming Consulting Engineers were recently appointed by HSE West Estates as Building Services Engineers associated with the Design and Site Monitoring, including Building Regulations Certification (BCAR) for the Ground Floor Block 2C Ward Fit out in University Hospital Galway.

The project consists of the design and refurbishment of the existing Physiotherapy and Social Welfare Departments on the Ground Floor of Block 2C in UHG to a new 31 Bed Medical Assessment Ward and Short Stay Ward. The project has been broken into 4 phases as follows:

  • Phase 1     Relocation of the Social Welfare Department into Temporary accommodation adjacent to Block 2C, approx 250m2.
  • Phase 2     Relocation the In-patients Physiotherapy Department into the original Social Welfare area, approx 350m2.
  • Phase 3     New Short Stay Ward with 17 Single, Twin & Multi bedrooms, clean & dirty utilities, assisted bathrooms/showers, staff area, offices and treatment rooms, approx 550m2.
  • Phase 4     New Assessment Ward consisting of a large 10 Bed Multi Ward and 4 Bed Assessment Rooms, reception, waiting area, office, pantry, and toilet facilities, approx 250m2.

Block 2C is located beside the existing A&E department in the centre of the hospital. Block 2C contains the CT/MRI/X-Ray departments, ICU & HDU, basement medical records, and hospital data centre. Varmings was involved in the original design of Block 2C in 1998 and the recent Block 2A Medical Assessment Unit in 2007. HSE West have drawn on our previous experience in both projects to develop the M&E brief and service interfaces, to minimise disruption to the adjacent live areas.

The Project is due to commence in July 2015, and it compliments our extensive and successful experience in the Acute Healthcare and with the HSE West.
