Low & Zero Carbon Technologies in Action

The drive toward EU net carbon neutrality targets is ongoing, and Varming's team of building services design consultants is more than doing its part. Climate change is a very real problem that needs to be tackled for future generations, and central to this aim is the use of low and zero-carbon technologies.

As such, Varming Consulting Engineers has been involved in many projects over the years that use these systems, and in this article, we look at an example of them in action.

What Are Low & Zero Carbon Technologies?

As their name suggests, low- and zero-carbon technologies are essentially systems that emit either low levels of CO2 emissions or none at all. When incorporated into an efficient or passive building design fabric, building emissions can be greatly reduced or eliminated.

Different kinds of these technologies can offer a variety of types of electricity, energy, cooling, heating, or a combination of them all. Amongst them, you’ll find a range of options, such as:

  • Solar photovoltaics (panels)

  • Combined heat & power

  • Ground source heat pumps

  • Air source heat pumps

  • Solar hot water

  • Wind turbines

  • Biofuels

These innovations can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable energy use. This naturally leads to cleaner air and a healthier environment while reducing dependence on fossil fuels. An example of technologies like these in action can be seen at the Clonakilty Community Hospital project, which our M & E consultants were involved with in 2022.
