NBS National BIM Report 2017

Every year, there is an industry recognised report generated by NBS (National Building Specification), which provides a comprehensive overview of how Building Information Modelling (BIM) is being used. This year’s report is the 7th of it’s kind and it serves to illustrate the changes that have occurred in the industry since the implementation of the UK Government’s mandate and push for BIM level 2 in construction, last year.

The report is too long to detail here, but should you wish to read it, you can download it free of charge from NBS website https://www.thenbs.com/knowledge/nbs-national-bim-report-2017-articles  and it contains analysis and insight as well as;

  • A Foreword from Richard Waterhouse, NBS CEO

  • A precis of the report’s findings

  • A roadmap to Level 3 BIM in the digital environment

  • The EU BIM Task Group and the progress it has made

  • The details of a case study on the use of BIM in the education sector

Findings

The report states that over half of the people surveyed feel that the UK Government’s mandate for BIM is heading in the right direction and that awareness of the concept of BIM and its benefits to efficiency and collaboration is widespread.

 It also mentions that;

  • Adoption of BIM is, in practice, up a full 8% on the previous year
  • Of those surveyed, 78% see BIM as the future of project information
  • Almost two thirds of people believe that BIM can bring real benefit beyond the design stages

However, conversely, 72% thought that clients don’t yet fully understand the benefits it represents.

At Varming Consulting Engineers Ireland, we understand that BIM represents the future of construction in Ireland, but we also know that there is still some work to do to achieve the BIM 2 mandate from 2016 and complete, widespread and informed awareness. Which is why we will continue to strive to educate and implement cutting edge sustainable design technology for a better, more energy efficient, cleaner future.
