Sustainability in M&E: Past, Present & Future

06 November 2026

As Varming Consulting Engineers celebrates its 80th anniversary, we reflect on how sustainability in M&E has evolved since our foundation in 1946.

Over eight decades, mechanical and electrical (M&E) design has changed significantly. Traditional heating, lighting and ventilation systems have evolved into advanced, energy-efficient solutions. Today, sustainability influences how buildings are designed, operated and maintained.

Throughout this journey, Varming has continued to develop its expertise to meet changing environmental expectations and technological advances.

The Past: Building the Foundations

When Varming was established in 1946, building services engineering focused on reliable heating, lighting, ventilation and electrical infrastructure.

However, as technology developed, energy efficiency became an increasingly important consideration. Improvements in equipment, building controls and energy management gradually transformed engineering design.

During the 1970s, global energy challenges brought greater attention to conservation. As a result, engineers began placing more emphasis on reducing energy consumption while maintaining comfort, safety and reliability.

These developments laid the foundations for today’s sustainable building services engineering practices.

The Present: Sustainability in M&E Design

Today, sustainability is central to Varming’s M&E design approach.

From the earliest design stages, our engineers consider energy efficiency, carbon emissions, building performance and occupant wellbeing.

Through our specialist Sustainability Services, we help clients improve building performance and reduce environmental impact. Our expertise includes energy modelling, building energy assessments and sustainability consultancy.

Furthermore, our engineering solutions incorporate efficient heating and ventilation, heat pumps, LED lighting, intelligent controls and renewable energy technologies.

Our environmental commitment is supported by ISO 14001:2015 certification and membership of the Irish Green Building Council.

Importantly, Varming became the first dedicated building services consultancy in Ireland to join the World Green Building Council’s Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment. This milestone reflects our continued focus on supporting a lower-carbon built environment.

The Changing Role of Building Services Engineering

Sustainable engineering involves more than selecting energy-efficient equipment.

Instead, it requires a coordinated approach to building design and operation. Engineers must balance energy performance with comfort, reliability, maintenance and long-term adaptability.

For existing buildings, improvements may include upgrading heating systems, modernising lighting and introducing smarter controls. These measures can reduce energy demand and improve operational efficiency.

Similarly, new developments benefit from early collaboration between engineers, architects and other design professionals. This helps ensure that sustainable solutions are integrated from the outset.

Consequently, building services engineers play an increasingly important role in creating efficient, resilient and lower-carbon buildings.

The Future: Engineering for a Low-Carbon World

Looking ahead, sustainability will continue to influence M&E engineering.

For example, electric heating systems, renewable energy integration and advanced building controls will become increasingly important. Improved energy monitoring will also help building operators identify opportunities to reduce consumption.

In addition, whole-life carbon will receive greater attention. This considers environmental impacts associated with materials, construction, maintenance and eventual replacement.

As technologies and environmental standards evolve, buildings must remain efficient and adaptable. Therefore, engineering solutions must consider both current requirements and future challenges.

Varming will continue developing its expertise and collaborating with clients to support sustainable, future-focused building design.

Continuing Our Sustainability Legacy

Since 1946, Varming’s engineering expertise has evolved alongside the changing needs of the built environment.

Today, our commitment to sustainable engineering remains central to our approach. As we celebrate 80 years, we continue to focus on innovation, collaboration and environmental responsibility.

Our aim remains clear: to help create efficient, resilient buildings that support a more sustainable future.
