Varming’s Evolution: From the 1990s to Today
Building on the foundations of its first four decades, Varming Consulting Engineers entered the 1990s as an established building services engineering practice. Technology, working practices and approaches to building performance continued to evolve. Throughout these changes, quality, collaboration and sound engineering judgement remained central to the practice.
The 1990s – Quality and Expansion
The decade began with a significant milestone. In 1991, Varming became the first Irish professional services company to achieve quality assurance certification to the international quality standard ISO 9001/EN 29001. Varming has maintained this commitment to quality through continued certification and accreditation.
Major projects during this period included Tallaght Hospital, Hewlett Packard, Dublin Civic Offices, Government Buildings, the Conrad Hotel and Coca-Cola Ballina. Later commissions included the Mosque in Clonskeagh, Park Place Office Development and UCD Health Sciences.
The 2000s – Evolving Engineering Priorities
As building services became increasingly sophisticated, Varming continued to develop its approach to design and project delivery.
In 2004, Varming established a dedicated Sustainable Engineering group in response to the growing importance of energy within building design. Today, sustainability forms an integral part of Varming’s engineering activities and influences design across the practice.
The same year also saw the practice adopt the name Varming Consulting Engineers. In 2005, Varming established a third office in Roscommon, strengthening its presence in the west of Ireland.
Projects from this period included UCD Conway Institute, Cork Opera House, University College Hospital Galway Phase 2 and DCU School of Nursing. In 2006, Varming celebrated 60 years of engineering practice in Ireland.
The 2010s – A More Integrated Approach
The 2010s brought further changes to project design and coordination. CAD had already become an established part of the practice. Varming also began embracing Building Information Modelling (BIM), supporting greater integration and collaboration across project teams.
In 2013, Varming moved from its long-standing Tramway House headquarters to Classon House.
Projects during the decade included Monaghan Education Campus, Malahide Castle, Kerrygold Park and the University of Limerick Analog Devices Building. Other notable projects included Three Park Place, Bon Secours Cork and the new Garda Divisional Headquarters at Kevin Street.
The 2020s – Building on Experience
Today, Varming continues to work across its established sectors from offices in Dublin, Cork and Roscommon. Sustainable design now plays an increasingly important role across projects, reflecting changing expectations for energy performance and the built environment.
Recent work includes Project Greenfield for Integer in Galway and Roscommon Hospice Palliative Care Unit. Other projects include the new Orthopaedic Theatre Block at Merlin Park University Hospital, Four & Five Park Place and University Hospital Limerick Phase 1 Ward Block. Varming has also undertaken works at Garda Headquarters in the Phoenix Park.
80 Years of Evolution
In 2026, Varming Consulting Engineers celebrates 80 years of building services engineering in Ireland. Since the practice began in 1946, engineering methods, technologies and expectations have continually evolved.
Across eight decades, the principles at the heart of Varming have endured: quality, innovation, sustainability and collaborative engineering. These principles continue to shape our approach to the buildings of today and the challenges of tomorrow.
