Celebrating Engineering Excellence Across Eight Decades
For over 80 years, Varming Consulting Engineers has delivered high-quality mechanical and electrical (M&E) engineering solutions across Ireland. Over that time, therefore, the company has earned multiple industry awards. These awards reflect a consistent commitment to technical excellence, collaboration, and delivering buildings that perform as intended. This blog highlights a number of award-winning M&E projects delivered across healthcare, education and commercial sectors. A selection of these award-winning projects can be viewed on our dedicated Awards page.
Award-Winning M&E Projects Across Multiple Sectors
Connolly Hospital – N+1 Generator Resilience Project
The Connolly Hospital N+1 Generator Resilience Project focused on improving electrical resilience and backup power reliability for critical hospital infrastructure. In this case, the project involved upgrading and integrating standby generation systems. This ensured continuity of power supply to essential clinical services. As a result, the project won an ACEI Award for Engineering Excellence in 2026.
Garda Headquarters, Phoenix Park – Block J
The Garda Headquarters, Phoenix Park – Block J project required a highly coordinated M&E design solution within a sensitive operational environment. Furthermore, the engineering approach balanced performance, resilience and security. It also integrated seamlessly with the architectural intent. As a result, the Block J Garda Headquarters project won an ACEI Award for Engineering Excellence for its innovative and sustainable building services design within a protected historic building.
Merlin Park University Hospital – Orthopaedic Theatre Block
In particular, the Merlin Park University Hospital Orthopaedic Theatre Block demanded precise environmental control, specialist ventilation strategies and system redundancy to support clinical performance. The project team integrated healthcare-specific M&E systems to meet infection prevention requirements and ensure long-term operational reliability. Therefore, this project won an ACEI Award for Engineering Excellence for the delivery of specialist healthcare building services engineering.
Roscommon Hospice Palliative Care Unit
Similarly, the Roscommon Hospice Palliative Care Unit focused on delivering a calm, comfortable and dignified environment through carefully designed building services. The design team tailored the engineering solutions to support patient comfort, energy efficiency and ease of operation, aligned with the sensitive nature of palliative care facilities. As a result, this project won an ACEI Award for Engineering Excellence for the building services design delivered in this specialist healthcare environment.
Donegal Town Garda Station – Refurbishment & Extension
Meanwhile, the Donegal Town Garda Station Refurbishment and Extension project involved the upgrade and extension of an operational Garda facility. The M&E design required careful coordination to integrate new building services systems within the existing building while maintaining station operations. Consequently, the Donegal Garda Station project won an ACEI Design Excellence Award for the coordinated and sustainable building services design developed through detailed early-stage engineering design.
Additional Award-Recognised Projects
In addition to the projects highlighted above, Varming has received industry recognition for engineering contributions across a wider portfolio of developments. These include educational buildings, commercial facilities and civic projects. In each case, the project teams delivered the developments with the same focus on technical clarity, collaboration and long-term performance.
A Consistent Approach to Engineering Excellence
Overall, what connects Varming’s award-winning projects is not a single technology or sector, but a consistent engineering approach. This includes early engagement with design teams, rigorous technical analysis, and the delivery of systems that operate efficiently throughout the building lifecycle. Therefore, Varming views industry awards not as an end in themselves, but as independent recognition of the standards applied across all projects.
Continuing the Legacy
As Varming enters its 80th anniversary year, these award-winning projects serve as milestones within a much broader body of work. Looking forward, they also reflect an ongoing commitment to engineering excellence that continues to shape the firm’s contribution to Ireland’s built environment.
